The play opens in the Garden of Olives, Jerusalem, where Christ is crucified and his side is pierced. After his death and while Jesus is still alive, Mary comes to visit the tomb and reflects on the crucifixion, how he was different from the other people she had known. Mary then sees a man who is not a soldier, and is wounded, but says that he is an angel, which Mary is not sure about. The angel is the man of sorrows, and Mary sits with him, praying for his soul. After he has died, she helps bury him, and later in the evening, she notices a crowd of women enter the garden and run to the tomb, shouting that the body of Jesus has been taken, but is not there. While the women are at the tomb, the men say that they know that the disciples have taken the body away, but they have not seen the body. Joanna, one of the women, is sad that no one is caring for Christ, and the three women decide to tell Martha and her sister about the body being gone. Martha is sad about the body not being there, but they start to agree that the disciples have probably taken the body away. The men of the town then believe that the women are crazy and have taken the body, and they don't believe that they will find it. Mary suggests that
